civil guard
A branch of the South Vietnamese security forces whose primary purpose was defensive operations in provincial areas. Michigan State University Group officials wished to transform the guard into a more local, village-based security force, while Ngô Đình Diệm preferred maintaining it as a nation-wide paramilitary force, in large part to counter opponents highly placed in the regular army of South Vietnam.
